Wiki Instructions
The Citizens Climate Corps website is built upon a wiki platform called "Wikidot." We set up the website on this platform to make it easy for anybody who wants to be involved with the CCC to easily add new content to the website. This page will guide you through the initial steps of that process. If you have any trouble, please feel free to e-mail moc.trey|kram#moc.trey|kram with your questions.
Step 1: Set up an account at Wikidot
- Go to the following page to set up a new account: https://www.wikidot.com/auth:newaccount
- You will be asked to set up a username, password, and e-mail address. You will need to check your inbox for a passkey and enter it to complete the setup process.
Step 2: Join the wiki at CitizensClimateCorps.org
- Go to http://citizensclimatecorps.org/system:join and apply to join.
- Your membership will most likely be approved by the Wiki administrator within 24 hours. If you know the secret password, feel free to enter it and join instantly!
Step 3: Edit the wiki
- You are currently free to edit most pages in the wiki.
- Generally, however, it is polite to not make drastic changes that eliminate the work of others. Rather, begin slowly by making small contributions, add extra bullet points where appropriate, etc.
- The best place to add your voice is on the Action Ideas page, where we're keeping a list of all possible actions that might be interesting to other members! You can find that page here: http://citizensclimatecorps.org/actions
Step 4: Syntax/technical details for editing
- Editing text in the wiki is simple, but it often takes a little time to get used to it.
- To edit an existing page…
- navigate to that page the same way you would navigate to any web page— click on links until you get to the page you want.
- Then scroll down to the bottom of that page and click on the "edit" button.
- You will find an edit screen is opened up for you, showing you the "source" text that made up the page you were on.
- At the top of the edit screen you will find a series of buttons that enable many standard editing features, like font size, bold, italic, underline, numbered list, bulleted list, superscript, subscript, etc. You can also add web links (URLs) and even embed video and audio into the page.
- Simply "mouse over" each of the buttons to find out what they do.
- To change text with a button, select the text, click on the button, and key symbols will be applied to that text to affect how it ultimately shows up when you save changes.
- Be sure to click on "save" at the bottom of the page when you are done editing. Otherwise your changes will not be saved.
- Please add a short description of your change in the box labeled "Short description of changes:" so that others can know what you have done.
- To create a new page…
- Find the menu bar on the right side of all pages at CitizensClimateCorps.org.
- At the bottom of that menu bar, you will see menu option to "Add a new page" with a text box right below it.
- Simply add the name of your new page into that text box and then click on the "new page" button right below it.
- You will be taken to an edit screen for that new page.
- Go ahead and add the text and elements that you want in your new page.
- Be sure to click on "save" at the bottom of the page when you are done editing. Otherwise your changes will not be saved.
- Please add a short description of your change in the box labeled "Short description of changes:" so that others can know what you have done.
- To link to another page within the CCC wiki, for instance, the "Action Ideas" page, simply embed the following code into your page: [[[actions | Action Ideas]]]
- You can learn more about editing pages here: http://www.wikidot.com/faq:editing-pages .
- If you want to dive deeper into the syntax, you can check that out here: http://www.wikidot.com/doc:wiki-syntax .
- My favorite way to start learning syntax is to click on the "+options" button at the bottom of this page, then click on "view source" to see what syntax was used on this page. You can click on "view source" on all other pages, too, until you get the hang of things.
- Another easy way to get started is to watch a few of the videos here: http://www.wikidot.com/doc:video . These videos explain how to edit pages, create pages, etc.
- You can also try the Wikidot Handbook: http://handbook.wikidot.com/en:introduction
